Women’s Day: the mimosa is the flower of 8 March

February strides and shyly announces nice weather. March is here and now brings a riot of flowers and colors. And it is in March that we celebrate the Women’s Day, which immediately brings to mind the mimosa. Just mention on March 8 to imagine the yellow bunches of this lovely spring flower and exquisitely.

International Women’s Day has its symbols and traditions embodied in the intense yellow of the mimosa and perhaps not everyone knows that the flower that celebrates March 8 has an important meaning.

The celebration of International Women’s Day reminds every year the struggle for women’s emancipation and the conquest of basic rights for women. So there is history with a capital H behind the delightful flower mimosa.

And is now the flower par excellence of a tradition that goes honored. Were women UDI – Union Women in Italy, in which militated exponents of the PCI, PSI, Christian Left, Labor and Democracy Action Party – to choose the mimosa flower as the official symbol for the celebration of the first anniversary of the Day international Women after the Second World War, the March 8, 1946.

The event dedicated to women was celebrated around the world for decades: the March 8, 1908 happened the terrible accident in the New York factory that killed more than 100 workers (some argues that there is some confusion with ‘ other tragedy occurred in 1911) and America women’s Day was celebrated as early as 1909, while in parts of Europe since 1911 and in Italy since 1922.

And we return to Italy. The choice of mimosa to celebrate and symbolize March 8th you have three Italian women, Teresa Noce, Rita Montagnana and Teresa Mattei.
The reasons for the choice are several: the mimosa flower is a simple, but beautiful and very colorful; blooms between February and March, to coincide with the anniversary; It is cheap and easily available; Finally, in some cultures the flower of mimosa means strength and femininity.

Widespread in the countryside, the mimosa is tenacious, tough as only women can be; It is apparently fragile but able to survive and flourish even under difficult conditions. It ‘a flower that heralds the arrival of spring and life reborn.

What better summary, therefore, to represent the feminine world? The mimosa is the symbol of a holiday that reminds all women, even today, their battles and victories and the road there is to go to achieve equal dignity and opportunities than men.

And ‘why the 8th of March is an important day, when women remind other women made the achievements and future projects. A day in which men can take this opportunity to pay tribute with elegance and grace to the women in their lives: the wives, daughters, mothers, sisters, her friends, the colleagues.

With the mimosa we celebrate a special occasion in which every woman celebrating other women, solidarity, strength, the energy that each brings and gives to others.

Give a sprig of mimosa is never a trivial gesture, embodies a bit ‘of history, our present and a precious promise for the future.
